About us
Why we campaign
Fairer Family Court is a voluntary campaign for practical, evidence-based changes to family law in England and Wales.
Our aim
Every child deserves the protection of both parents, unless there is real evidence of risk. Every decision about a child should rest on evidence that is written down, measured and open to challenge.
We do not campaign for the rights of one parent over another. We campaign for the child’s right to fair, safe and timely decisions.
How we work
Each campaign focuses on one problem and one clear change in the law. We publish the evidence, draft the wording, and ask supporters to write to their MP at the moments when it counts.
Who we are
Gavin Johnston founded Fairer Family Court. He is an engineer and continuous improvement specialist whose career has focused on improving processes to reduce faults and waste, where measuring and mitigating risk is part of everyday work.
Gavin has always had a social conscience. After helping a number of people through the family court, and experiencing it first hand, he could not stand by while the courts fail society: children are suffering, fathers are taking their own lives, and women have been killed. To someone from his background the solutions were clear, yet the sector seemed unaware that change is possible and that best practice can be found.
His hope is that the lawyers, politicians, reporting officers and managers he meets across this series of campaigns will adopt the same culture of continuous improvement that has brought huge improvements in so many other sectors.
Gavin lobbies privately on a self-funded campaign, with no corporate or charity support. Gifts from individual supporters help cover campaign costs.
